It just seems to me that as parents, we are ALL the “everything police” to our children, and if we aren’t, we’re abdicating that responsibility to others. If you’re cool with that, then that’s a different story – just think about who you are giving the responsibility to and what standards you are willing to accept from them until YOU decide to step in.
I guess what I meant by not wanting to be the music police for my kids is that I trust a rating on a TV show to provide my children with age-appropriate content. I don’t think that this is age-appropriate content. I’m not opposed to listening to music or watching movie or TV shows before they are allowed to see them, however; when I have expectations about a show because of its rating, then I expect to be able to trust that rating. When I was 9, saying the word, “freaking” was completely off-limits. I hate to sound old fashioned, but the music I listened to at his age didn’t even come close to talking about such things. I agree that it can be used as a discussion for appropriate behavior it just seems like there is SO much that we have to guard our children from these days.

I don’t envy any parent. It is a huge responsibility! I’m always hesitant to weigh in on issues of this nature simply because I’m often dismissed due to the fact that I don’t have my own children. But I do have 5 siblings that are still children, 2 who are just barely “adults” and 3 who are grown and have their own families, all with very different parenting styles. Every child is different and the learn differently.
I agree with Sara in the respect that it is an opportunity for discussion with your son. In my own life and experiences with my younger siblings (who I have had a big part in raising), when you simply forbid something without discussing it, children are likely to start rebelling and the forbidden is even more desirable to them. When you sit them down and explain what it is exactly that you don’t approve of (in the lyrics or tv show or whatever) and why… and, in this case, what is appropriate and effective communication vs. what is not, it seems to go a lot further.
I also feel that you can’t trust a tv network or rating. For one thing, as Christians, we often have different standards and expectations than that of the rest of the world. Parents definitely should be the “everything police,” especially when the children are young.
I am with you. I hate pretty much everything that is geared toward children but try to look at it this way: at this age they are just listening to the beat and even if they do mimic the words they most likely have no idea at all what they are saying. Id keep an eye on it as he got older but it is a tough battle to wage.

As far as slang phrases go, Freaking the freak out is closer to your interpretation than you may prefer… but it is completely acceptable in song lyrics for a 17 year old star of a Nickelodeon show. This show pushes some limits, I agree, but I can assure you that Nickelodeon has been at the set with a ruler measuring skirts on a daily basis. I believe it is more important for you to help your child understand and learn the underlying values that these shows are based on, rather than to worry about him finding hidden inuendo that is sometimes found in these shows to keep the parents engaged.
Hiding dangers from kids is not the only way to protect them.
Then again, I have no kids so you probably think I don’t know what the freak I’m talking about.

My kids & I liked the song when we heard it. They love the beat and dancing to it and I don’t have a problem w/ it. I think it’s a good way for them to blow off some steam in a good way. They know it’s not acceptable for them to freak out on me or their dad (and w/ their dad being ex military he has no problem putting his foot down). They honestly just love the part of the song that they can go crazy & freak out dancing to….i love their innocence and have no problem telling them that a song or tv show is inappropriate.

Freak the Freak Out!! There is no question that this song is not appropriate for the age group this song is being played. The songs messege, actual lyrics or meaning are not the issue. The phrase ” I’m going to freak the freak out” is not appropriate and any adult with common sense should see that. As far as using it for a discussion point, I don’t want to be prompted by a goofy nick jr. t.v. show to discuss the fact that I don’t want her using phrases like “I’m going to freak the freak out”. Thats ridiculous. T.V. in general is something as parents we have to watch close, but I have assumed that disney and Nick Jr. is safe for them. This should be understood by the individules in charge of these networks. “I’m going to freak the freak out”, for an audience who’s average age is probably 9 or 10? Are you serious?

I don’t even think it’s appropriate for a teenager to be saying this TO their parents, let alone a 9 or 10 year old. What happened to teaching our children to RESPECT their elders? The song might be “more” appropriate for a teenager to sing on her own record, but certainly not on a show that is geared towards elementary age children.
