I apologize that this is 4 days late hitting the web, I genuinely do.  I had become stuck in a rut and was spending WAY too much time on the computer and not nearly enough time with my children or being a good (house)wife.  I unplugged for a few days and spent an astonishing amount of time outside playing and teaching my 10 year old to ride his bike.

No, I’m not kidding.

Last Tuesday, we started the 21 Day Body Transformation.  I’ve found it to be only lightly time-consuming and extremely worthwhile.  I believe this coming week, things will pick up and we’ll spend more time working on our muscle building and cardiovascular activities, although I haven’t looked ahead to find out whether or not that’s a true statement.  I like taking it one day at a time.  If you want to join us, it’s not too late!

I want to lightly touch on something this week that has been bothering me in regards to Paleo.  Not anything about Paleo in particular, but about how people react when they hear that we don’t eat grains.

I can’t tell you how many times in the past 3 months I’ve heard, *GASP*”You don’t eat GRAINS?  But you need them to survive!  You need them to produce good breastmilk! You need them for fiber and nutrients!  Your children NEED grains to lead healthy lives!”

Really?

How on earth did the Homo Sapien survive to this point considering grains weren’t edible up until a few thousand years ago?  Blows my mind.

I also like this one: “Oh, yeah.  Another fad diet.”

Well, no.  Not so much considering it’s how our ancestors thousands of years ago ate.

My favorite:  ”Cavemen didn’t eat THAT” (whatever “that” is from a paleo-approved cookie to a crock-pot roasted Boston Butt smothered in homemade Barbecue sauce and eaten in a butter lettuce leaf.

You’re right.  Cavemen DIDN’T eat THAT.  Paleo is not a historical reenactment.  It is an intuitive way of eating that builds its foundation on the things that our ancestors would have hunted and gathered.  We are lucky to live in a time and place where technology is king and we are able to eat things made with the ingredients that our ancestors ate, but made in a different way.

Lucky me.  Poor caveman.

  1. I get the usual comments but most people only need to see what I looked like a year ago to realize how far I’ve come. My response is simple, “I look better and I feel better.”. I have stopped trying to argue a case for Paleo with people who aren’t interested…if they want to know more, they will ask me. (and a LOT of them do)

    • A LOT of people ask me when they see how far I’ve come in 3 short months. It’s SO great when people don’t think you’re just absolutely NUTS. I find that down in the south, people are so used to their food, that they just can’t imagine anything else.

My craziest moment when I almost went caveman on someone was Thanksgiving.. when the mother in law informed me she was bringing an ENTIRE extra meal… turkey, stuffing, ect…. for the people who wanted ” Normal” food!!!!!! WTH! I had two organic turkeys brining, real green beans (paleo on the fence) organic mashed sweet potatoes, regular potatoes, and the sweet ones all with organic ingredients and marshmellows for those sugar eaters, ect ect ect.. I was LIKE WHAT THE &%$#!! it made me furious and took all of my stregnth not to explode on her! What I usually do is try to refer them to some websites… and just sit back and watch after that… I dont want to shove it on them… no really I do! heheheh!

    • I DO want to shove it on people!!! HA! But I know that usually just turns people away. :) My in-laws started Paleo a week after I did so I was lucky with Christmas this year. We had an entire Paleo meal and it was phenomenal. I also made Paleo dessert and some side items for Thanksgiving so my non-Paleo family (whose house we were at) could taste it. They loved it and many asked more about the lifestyle.

      I am APPALLED at your mother in law. Seriously? Because “real” food isn’t “normal” food? Those sorts of people really get my goat. I would have gone ape on her…in my mind. ;)

  3. Well said! I eat paleo because my body seems to hate me when I don’t – simple as that. I have no joint pain, no headaches, no mental fog, no pressure point issues. Add even a little bit of non-gluten grains back into my diet, and that’s all back. I’m more than happy to stick to my weird diet, endure the questions and strange looks becuase I feel good for the first time in years.
    Am I losing weight? Yes. Am I getting stronger? Absolutely…but that’s just the sprinkles on top.

    • YES! I tell people ALL THE TIME that I didn’t change my lifestyle to lose weight. I changed it because I was sick and tired of being in PAIN all of the time. It’s funny you mention the non-gluten grains. I had a bowl of gluten-free cereal last week and had a horrendous headache for the rest of the day. It is the lack of that headache on a daily basis that makes me stick with this lifestyle. I actually feel badly for people who are on a quest to lose weight and gain health. They’re looking in the complete wrong direction. :(

    • I struggled with that when we first started too! It was so confusing to me what I might tell people when they asked things like that. I’m an EXTREMELY passionate person and sometimes it comes across as frustration but it’s just PASSION! So I’m trying to refine my answers so that I can explain it cohesively without coming across as a jerk! :) Good luck with your journey! I am SO excited to have you here.     • YES! The expensive comment! I get that a lot too. People do not even remotely believe me when I tell them that I spend about $50/week LESS now than I did before. Plus, if you add in the lunches that I ate out at least 3 times/week and our weekly pizza, you have a whole lot of money saved on food costs.

It is so nice now that I’ve reverted back to paleo I’m already seeing a huge health difference in a week. Not everyone wants to live paleo…including my husband, but it does make for a lot more healthy substitutions. When I started doing it 8 years ago, there was literally one book on the subject. Now it’s so much easier with all the recipes, cook books and support. I’m looking forward feeling even better over the next few weeks and ultimately get the hubs and kiddo 90% paleo too

    • Congrats on reverting!!! I was sold after one week too. I had been living with pain for as long as I could remember so not having a migraine for a week, being able to use my knees, having hips that didn’t ache, those were reasons enough for me to remain a Paleo lifestyler for LIFE. My husband wasn’t remotely interested at first but when he saw all of the physical changes in me, he was on board. His skin is clearer and he is a MUCH nicer person now. I’m still working on my kids *sigh*

    • That’s REALLY funny. I haven’t told our pediatrician yet, although she recommended we take Madilyn off of dairy last year so this isn’t a far cry from that, you know?

  11. As we have gone on our whole gluten free journey, I hear more often than not about how we’re just being picky, blah, blah, blah. I’m now looking to go Paleo with it because my body doesn’t seem to metabolize grains properly – I go off them, I feel great and lose weight. Go back on, feel cruddy and bloated. You would swear it’s a sin to eat healthy!

    • It’s amazing how people demonize healthy eating, isn’t it? Even nutritionists preach the whole, “MODERATION IS KEY” thing. Well, if I eat grains and it gives me a migraine, makes my joints hurt like heck, and causes me to just feel like general crap, how is that “good” for me? Why would I want to eat something in moderation (or at all) that makes me feel like sleeping all day? PSH!

  12. I recently had my in-laws freak out on me because there wasn’t a potato chip or piece of cheese to be found in the house. They were only going to be there from Friday night to Sunday morning. They did manage to buy a bag of chips and leave them on my counter before they left on Sunday. At the time, we were doing the Whole30, but during any other time there is plenty of cheese to be found in our fridge. I also had homemade grassfed creme fraiche, butter, and mayo in the fridge just for them, which they refused to even try. They did happen to bring some bread, store bought mayo, deli ham, and tomatoes with them, just so they wouldn’t starve to death over the weekend. LOL! The best part is, like most of the other commentors on your blog, we do not try to force paleo eating on them! They ask what we are eating every time we talk to them on the phone. Anyway, they were nice enough to loudly ask (several times a day), “How in the world did we make it to 72 eating the way we’ve been eating all these years?” And this is a good one, “Has there really been anyone who’s actually used coconut oil and were healthy?” Ugh! I had to remind them that their parents probably cooked most of their food with coconut oil up until the 50′s, so they actually were raised on for at least the first decade of their lives. By the end of the weekend we decided that even if they ask us, we will not discuss any food or health topics with them in the future. Sorry for the rant!

    • WOW. 5 years ago, my endocrinologist put me on a very restrictive diet (similar to Paleo now that I think about it), and I went to my dad’s house one weekend. He YELLED at me for not bringing my own food to eat and said that not everyone ate like I did and that it was silly of me to think that I could find what I needed in his house. This, coming from a man who is obsessed with being thin and “healthy”. I know it’s a little different because I was invading his space, not the other way around but still…. When people come visit us, we don’t really say anything, we just feed them what we’re eating. I haven’t had one person complain about the things that we’re eating. On the contrary, they generally love what I fix and don’t notice that they are missing anything. I do go out of my way to have fresh Paleo bread, beanless-hummus, and grain-free granola bars for the snackers in my life. :) Closed-minded people can absolutely be the most frustrating people to have in your life. You are more than welcome to rant here ANY time. :)

  13. I have been eating Paleo for over 4 months and get the same responses from people when I tell them what I eat and what I am no longer eating. It sometimes isn’t worth telling people because they end up looking at me like I have two heads and say they don’t do “fad” diets.

    Do you have any tips for boosting your milk supply while on Paleo? My 7 month old would appreciate it. :)

    • Hi, Robin! Before I started Paleo, I was eating LOADS of cereal and very little ANYTHING with nutrients in it. I wasn’t producing milk like crazy at the time and my then-7 month old seemed to linger at the breast. Now, I can feel a strong let-down again and am producing enough for him to still be mostly breastfed. I think that eating lots of veggies and fatty foods helps my milk supply a LOT. I eat 2 eggs EVERY morning, usually with veggies in them. I eat grain-free granola bars, a veggie-filled lunch, and a meaty dinner with 2 vegetable sides. That’s pretty consistent of what I eat each day. Paleo Parents have a grain-free lactation cookie you could try too!

  14. Yeah…I don’t get heckled, I get the “sly” glances at each other and the rolling of the eyes mostly. Whenever the subject comes up most of my family just says, “Oh good.” and then proceeds to talk behind my back and tell each other (but never me) how silly it all is.
    Because they couldn’t see the pain or the fatigue it wasn’t real, so the cure for it isn’t real either. I am constantly reiterating that the weight is a SYMPTOM, not the problem. I’m not sick because I’m fat!!! I’m fat because I’m sick! When I eat right, my illness is controlled and all the nasty symptoms that go along with it- fatigue, pain, weight gain (or an inability to lose it), headaches, hopelessness- I could go on and on.
    Obviously it makes me crazy. And to be honest, it hurts my feelings. Up until a few years ago, when I really started to get sicker, I worked harder than anyone I know, so for it to be implied that I’m lazy and I eat too much and that’s all the “real” problem I have is really, really hurtful.
    I was gluten free and dairy free for a year and then this year I went Paleo and so far I have not been to one single event (family ones included) where I didn’t have to pack food which I prepared before hand. I have also not had one single person- including my husband- make me a special food that I can eat. My birthday came and went with…..nothing. Christmas came and went and the table was full of candies and cookies that people had made “especially for Terry- since you won’t make it anymore”

    • YOU are doing great too! Keep taking care of yourself. I am sorry to hear that you do not have more support. I admire you for sticking to it! That is pretty impressive considering you get so much backlash from people around you.

    • I agree with Jenn, YOU are doing great. I am fortunate that my husband is on board and I DO still make him treats but they’re Paleo treats. He loves them as much (if not more in some cases) as he liked treats before we went Paleo. It’s good to get that emotion out. When I started paleo I swore I was not an emotional eater.

      Now I realize that I do connect emotions to eating and getting through those emotions has been a huge help in my Paleo success. Please let me know if you need to vent…EVER! I’m here for you, as are all of these other people too!

  15. I really hate it when people call it a fad diet.

    I also hate it when people make excuses about not having time to cook. I totally get that but guess what? There are still ways to succeed. I have had to succumb to take out food more than once on an over scheduled day but I still make good choices. You can order a burger no bun, no crappy sauces. You can order a taco with fresh salsa and guacamole and only eat the insides with a fork and leave the tortilla behind. It CAN be done people.

    I also hate that people will not give it a try at least for a week so they could see how much better they feel.
    I have not met a person who does not feel better when they eat this way.

    People, why are you telling me that I am not healthy because I don’t eat my “whole grains?” You have a list of minor health issues and I am feeling GREAT when I stick to eating a hunter and gatherer diet. I think the fact that I feel better NOT eating the grains is a good indication that is good for my body.

    I am reading the book “Wheat Belly” right now and it really makes me sad for how many people just don’t want to hear the truth about wheat and high carb foods.
    How do you argue with evidence of people being cured from CRAZY ailments, some of them cured within just a few days of eliminating wheat? I don’t know but when people see me reading this book or hear me talking about it they just start making excuses. Please read the book before you try to discuss anything about the topic ok? That is all I am asking. Problem is I know they will not read the book because they don’t want to hear it, they want to eat their wheat and not hear about why that is bad. Wheat does actually have drug like qualities, reading about that in the book was eye opening and sad.

    Bottom line: I feel better this way! How could I not want to share this info so other people can feel better too? I am not trying to judge anyone, I am just trying to help them.

    As much as I sometimes loathe the social networking of today I do like the fact that I can connect with other people who have started to face the truth about nutritional health. Thanks for this blog and thank you to others who participate in these kinds of conversations. It is nice to be able to connect to all of you and share our tips and stories with each other!

    • I really hate it when people call it a fad diet too. I LOVE Facebook because I am friends with so many people who have health issues. I find joy in commenting about how great I feel each day while they are commenting about their perpetual state of misery. We bought “Wheat Belly” for my father in law for Christmas and he’s loving it. I plan on doing a post soon about the ailments that intuitive eating can eliminate. Throw me some ideas if you have any!

  16. Hi Summer. Thank you so much for writing this! I can not tell you how many times these thoughts have gone through my head. These are MY choices about MY body, and beyond my husband, I’m not sure why anyone else even cares about my diet. The normal reaction is as if I was asking THEM to give up grains, sugar, dairy, legumes etc.
    I just try to take a deep breath, explain my choices briefly and thentry to remember that their reaction, unfortunately, isn’t about ME, it’s about THEM.
    Oh, and then I show them my Paleo four pack abs ;-) (just kidding)

  17. I really just try to say you know what I’m clearly healthier than I’ve ever been so it works for me and just leave it at that. I’ve flat out been called stupid for the way I eat and I just try to avoid discussing it because it just makes me angry people are so rude.

    • People are seriously SO insensitive. If you told them that you had a fatal allergy to wheat, corn, rice, dairy, and beans they’d be totally OK with it, right? *UGH*

      • I use this all the time actually! Lol. Because I suppose you could say I am allergic. Especially when I’m eating out it’s just easier to tell the waitress I’m allergic/intolerant. I do the same in public places I just say I’m allergic and leave it at that.

  18. People mostly haven’t heckled us, but that may be because we started out because of food sensitivities. Mostly they feel sorry for us that we “can’t” eat those foods. I tell them not to feel sorry for us, since we feel so much better eating this way, and we eat very well, thank you. We don’t feel deprived in the least.

    • They should absolutely feel sorry for themselves that they DON’T enjoy the delicious foods that you do!!! I used to be one of those people, though. Now I feel bad for THEM that they don’t eat good things like we do! :)

  19. I usually get, “How could you be Paleo? You love to bake!” Being Paleo doesn’t mean I can’t bake! I just use healthier ingredients- coconut & almond flours, coconut oil, maple syrup, etc.

  20. I got heckled today. It made me sad. I did not feel confident enough to debate what I have been researching this whole time. I need to come up with a couple of quick points and have it ready when I am questioned or told that grains are healthy, and if you eat only meat you will get fat.

    • I know that feeling. I often feel like people are smarter or more knowledgeable than I am when it comes to nutrition which is such a LIE from the pit of hell. Nobody knows my body better than me. Only I know what my body responds to and what fuels it. You can only speak from your own personal experiences. Speak with confidence!

  21. I hate when people say to me with everything I’ve had to give up that there’s nothing left to eat. I want to say back, actually I eat more than you do.

    I hate Paleo deniers!
    Or people that put you down for choosing to lead a healthy life because they are so miserable with their own fitness, that they project their insecurities onto you and put you down. The hardest part is they work in numbers, there are a lot more people out there that support their cause than ours. But you have to keep up the fight!

    My all time most hated line is:
    “Well I choose to eat whatever I like!”

    Yeah, so do I! I just choose to eat healthy.
