I started wearing glasses in 7th grade. I’ll never forget the first time I put them on and the amazement I felt as we drove home and I could see individual trees on the mountainside, not just a blur of evergreen. I’ve never been great about wearing them all the time like I’m supposed to, and because of my awkward vision and astigmatism, I don’t really need contacts.
A few years back I noticed that I really needed my glasses to drive so I started wearing them more often. The only problem was that I lived in sunny Florida and I had to make a choice between sunglasses or my Rx eyeglasses. I usually chose the eyeglasses over the sunglasses but the constant squinting led to some refined crow’s feet around my eyes, and fatty deposits in the inside corners of both eyes. They were ugly yellow blobs and I was disgusted. My eyes weren’t nearly as clear and pretty as they used to be.
I finally broke down and went to the eye doctor where I was scolded for not wearing sunglasses. Apparently sun exposure is a risk factor for macular degeneration. It was also the reason that I had those gross fatty deposits in my eyes. My eyes were simply trying to protect themselves! I sucked up the costs and purchased a pair of prescription sunglasses and dropped over $400 on one pair. The frames were only $78. It was the lenses that were so expensive! Ridiculous!
I’m typically horrible with sunglasses but I’ve protected these puppies with my LIFE. 2.5 years later I still have them.
My eyeglasses from that trip? OH, that’s a completely different story. I haven’t been very good to them and they were scratched all to heck. I couldn’t see out of them very well because of the deep scratches so driving at night was completely out of the question. Or extremely unsafe.
I finally went and got my eyes checked about a month ago. Once my exam was done, I perused the frame selection in the optical center. I loved some of the frames but when I went to order them, they were $285! The frames were only $100! What. The. HECK!?
I called The Workaholic and told him how much my glasses were going to be. He told me no way in heck and that I could find a cheaper option. I took my prescription from the tech and huffed out of there, embarrassed that my husband didn’t think my safety on the road at night was important in the slightest.
I got home and started browsing the web for a less expensive option for my glasses. I stumbled upon Just Eyewear and was immediately taken with their trendy frames. Then I noticed their prices. Frames and lenses for less than $50? SOLD! To the housewife with the cheap husband!
Entering my prescription to order my glasses was extremely easy, and they had a nifty tool that measured your pupillary distance using the webcam on your computer. SO cool, SO easy, and you don’t have to pay someone to do it for you.
A major bonus for me was that they come with a scratch-resistant coating on the lens and a UV layer for extra protection. You have to pay extra for those features at most optical outlets. I was STOKED!
I picked 3 lenses out and let my main men choose which frames they liked best. Because I had been to an optical center, I knew what I wanted and what looked best on my face. If you’re not sure what you want, go to your nearest eyeglass center, try some on, take pictures, then come home to the comfort of your sofa and order away.
My boys eventually chose some Love brand glasses that are purple and sort of cat-eyed and super trendy. I placed my order and crossed my fingers that everything would come soon, and come correct.
My glasses arrived about a week after I placed my order. I couldn’t believe it! It was a great day, indeed.
I tore open the package and rested my new frames upon my nose where my vision immediately cleared. They work! They are sturdy and strong. The prescription is just right, and they are so vintage nerdy chic which is exactly the look I was going for.
I get compliments on my new glasses all the time now, and I always refer people to Just Eyewear. People can’t believe I got them for about $50. I still can’t believe it either!
